Next-Gen e-Scooter Mini Hub Motors, Small Size – Big Punch!

The hub motor has just shrunk down to meet the growing e-kickscooter market. These next generation mini hub motors really pack a punch!

The small diameter tires usually attach right to the hub directly. The tires are available in solid, foam filled, or pneumatic. Generally, we prefer pneumatic tires as they offer a smoother ride and corner well at higher speeds. Unlike e-bikes, these mini hub motors do not require additional rims or spokes. Due to the small diameter of the wheel, these hub motors offer instant high torque while being surprisingly efficient.

Almost all are available in any tire type or optional side axle mount. All are available sensored or sensor-less. Disc brake rotors can be mounted to any size hub 8″ and above safely. Quality disc rotors are now available in 120mm, and 140mm sizing. Most hub motors 8″ and above are available with freewheel threads or freehub bodies as an option.

Here is a quick review of the current popular offerings available in 2015, all motors listed below are available in front or rear wheel drive.

UPDATE 9/11/2015: We are no longer advocates for the 4″, 5″ and 6″ direct drive (gear-less) hub motors. From our testing we have found that any direct drive/ gear-less hub motor under 8″ doesn’t have enough torque to handle basic hills or inclines.

New for mid-2015 is a geared 6″ hub motor (shown below.)

 The 6″ hub motor (geared):

6″ helical cut geared motor is one of the smallest and most powerful geared mini motors ever made! The solid tire size is (150x50mm.) The max Nm torque of this hub motor is about 30Nm. The hub is really well suited for folding, small footprint scooter designs.

6″ hub motor: 24v, 36v, 48v/ 180-300 watts max, 18-20 mph max speed.

The 8″ hub motor (geared):

8_in_hub_motor8″ helical cut geared motor offers a disc mount suitable for 120mm disc rotors. A wide range of tires are available as this is the most widely used kickscooter size hub (200x50mm.) The max Nm torque of this hub motor is about 30-32Nm. The hub is really well suited for folding, small footprint scooter designs.

8″ hub motor: 24v, 36v, 48v/ 180-300 watts max, 18-20 mph max speed.

 The 10″ hub motor (geared):

10″ helical cut geared motor offers a disc mount suitable for 140mm disc rotors. This may be the most time tested of all the mini hub motors because it has been sold by Trikke for almost 5 years now. The max Nm torque of this hub motor is about 30-35Nm. The hub is slightly more heavy but the high torque output is awesome for its compact size and stability.

10″ hub motor: 24v, 36v, 48v/ 180-500 watts max, 20-22 mph max speed.

 The 12″ cast hub motor (geared):

12_in_hubmotor12″ helical cut geared motor offers a disc mount suitable for 160mm disc rotors. The max Nm torque of this hub motor is about 30-35Nm. Widely available bike tires in 12.5″ (203.) The hub is slightly more heavy because of the cast spokes and rim.

12″ hub motor: 24v, 36v, 48v/ 180-500 watts max, 20-22 mph max speed.

 The 14″ cast hub motor (geared):

14_in_hub_motor14″ helical cut geared motor offers a disc mount suitable for 180mm disc rotors. The max Nm torque of this hub motor is about 50-60Nm. The hub is slightly more heavy because of the large cast rim.

14″ hub motor: 24v, 36v, 48v/ 350-600 watts max, 22-25 mph max speed.

    I would like to get a set each of the

    4″ hub motor: 24v
    5″ hub motor: 24v

    For prototyping purposes.

    How can I get a set of each of these?

    do you know what is the weight of 8″ geared hubmotor with air tire?

    The 8″/ 200mm geared hub motor weighs about 2kg or less than 4.5lbs with the pneumatic tire.

    Hi Im after about 12″ inch powered hub to carry a 150kg machine across grass and I need to ideally fix the speed at 1kph
